Abstract
An increasing number of companies set science-based sustainability targets, but many struggle to implement the strategy and make the targets operational within the organization. This thesis explores how to translate organization-level targets into product-level goals and strengthen design departments’ capacity to create more sustainable products. Using a case study of wind turbine manufacturer Vestas, it takes the company’s science-based Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target as an example. Scope 3 refers to emissions from the wider value chain outside a company’s direct operations. The thesis presents a process for moving from the organizational target to product-level targets, including identifying emission “hot spots” in products and clarifying each design department’s contribution share toward the product-level target. It also examines the sustainability opportunities and barriers seen by design departments and identifies what they need to focus more effectively on sustainable product design.
