Abstract
This thesis compares Ian McEwan’s Solar (2010) and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (2006) to explore how narrative and environment interact. It focuses on two contrasting modes: satire and tragedy. The study examines how each mode shapes both the fictional world (the storyworld) and the manner of telling (discourse: tone, structure, perspective). It then considers how these choices guide readers’ emotional responses to the worlds and characters, and how they may influence attitudes and possible behavior related to climate change. The analysis is set in the context of the Anthropocene, a term for the era in which human activity strongly affects Earth’s systems. Finally, the thesis discusses how satire and tragedy lead to different perceptions of environmental change in the novels, and whether such perceptions vary with readers’ cultural backgrounds.
