Abstract

This thesis examines how the development of surf tourism along the Moroccan Atlantic coast – focusing on Taghazout, Tamraght and Imsouane – affects local communities economically, socioculturally and environmentally, and how these impacts are perceived by different stakeholder groups. Based on a constructivist research philosophy, it applies a qualitative, multi-perspective design that combines questionnaire data from local stakeholders and tourists with a contextual analysis of media representations. The aim is to identify key economic benefits and challenges, such as new employment and business opportunities, rising living costs and increasing dependence on tourism, while also addressing environmental and sociocultural issues including crowding, pollution, cultural distance and gender-related tensions. The findings indicate that local actors and tourists evaluate the consequences of surf tourism differently, with tourists generally holding more positive views based on short-term stays, while locals more strongly experience both the advantages and costs of rapid tourism growth. Media coverage further shapes these understandings by, on the one hand, portraying the region as an attractive, lifestyle-oriented and sustainable surf destination and, on the other hand, highlighting loss of authenticity, conflicts over coastal planning and tensions between continued growth and sustainability. Overall, the study shows that surf tourism in this North African coastal context cannot be considered inherently positive or negative, but represents a complex interplay between global tourism dynamics, local governance and the shared meanings constructed by different stakeholder groups.
