Supporting user involvement in landscape architechture through service design: A framework for evaluation

Abstract

This thesis examines how service design tools and methods can enhance the development of urban public spaces within landscape architecture. Guided by the research question “How can we leverage service design tools and methods for the development of urban public spaces to support the landscape architect field?”, we developed a structured evaluation framework to assess both user involvement processes and user satisfaction in landscape architecture projects. Grounded in an iterative design process and a literature-informed approach, the framework integrates principles from service design, post-occupancy evaluation, and program evaluation. In collaboration with the landscape architecture firm Thing Brandt Landskab, we used methods such as expert and employee interviews, design probes, walk-and-talk, and co-creation to understand professional practice and to identify overlaps and differences between the fields. Our insights indicate that service design offers a more systematic approach to stakeholder engagement and iterative development, supporting landscape architects in navigating complex, context-dependent projects. The proposed framework promotes reflective, user-centered practice and aims to improve collaboration, knowledge sharing, and future project outcomes. Although it was not implemented or tested within the thesis period due to the long timeframes of landscape projects, the framework contributes to bridging participatory design and evaluation. Its adaptive nature makes it scalable and context-sensitive, particularly useful for early-career professionals. Future work includes developing an accessible guidebook and testing the framework in practice to validate its usability and impact.

Rammeværket er udviklet gennem en iterativ designproces og en litteraturbaseret tilgang, som kombinerer principper fra servicedesign, post-occupancy evaluation og programevaluering. I samarbejde med landskabsarkitektvirksomheden Thing Brandt Landskab anvendte vi metoder som ekspert- og medarbejderinterviews, designprober, walk-and-talk samt co-creation for at forstå praksis og afdække ligheder og forskelle mellem felterne. Vores indsigt peger på, at servicedesign tilbyder en mere systematisk tilgang til interessentinddragelse og iterativ udvikling, hvilket kan hjælpe landskabsarkitekter i komplekse, kontekstafhængige projekter. Den foreslåede ramme understøtter refleksiv, brugercentreret praksis og har til formål at forbedre samarbejde, videndeling og fremtidige projektresultater. Rammeværket blev ikke implementeret eller testet inden for specialets tidsramme på grund af de lange projektforløb i branchen, men udgør et bidrag til at bygge bro mellem deltagende design og evaluering.
