Abstract

This thesis examines supplier management and supplier development within supply chain management, using Siemens Wind Power (SWP) as the empirical case. It aims to understand how supplier management works and is integrated into SWP’s procurement process, how it should be structured to reduce supply risk, and how supplier development can become an integrated part of the procurement strategy. The study applies a systems approach, combining extensive secondary data from internal and external sources with primary data from participant observation and interviews with Commodity Managers. After a review of literature on procurement and supplier management, SWP’s processes are analyzed. The analysis indicates that the success of the procurement process strongly depends on supplier management practices; that supplier segmentation helps align sourcing decisions with corporate strategy and reduce supply risk; and that periodic supplier evaluations and performance measurement support early risk identification and the design of supplier improvement initiatives.
