Abstract
This master’s thesis explores how sufficiency can support well-being and development within planetary boundaries. It starts from the observation that economic growth still dominates decision-making while absolute decoupling of GDP from resource use remains uncertain. Using the doughnut economics framework—with a social foundation and an ecological ceiling—the study focuses on sufficiency as an alternative to growth-centric logic. Through a scoping review of the literature and interviews with experts and practitioners, it develops a holistic picture of the current state and future potential of sufficiency. Findings indicate that sufficiency aligns well with the doughnut framework, challenges the notion of sacrifice, and can enhance well-being for individuals and the planet by reducing environmental pressures while meeting essential needs. The thesis contributes an integrated understanding of how demand- and supply-side measures can steer society toward a safe and just operating space, offering a basis for policies and practices that connect sufficiency with well-being and sustainable development.
