Abstract

This master's thesis develops a Strategic-Physical Development Plan for Lønstrup that asks how the small coastal town can become more walkable and bikeable while balancing everyday life, tourism, and nature. Motivated by peak-season congestion, parking shortages, and conflicts between cars and pedestrians, the study examines mobility practices (car use, walking, cycling, parking) and their effects on accessibility, safety, comfort, public space, local businesses, and environmental quality. The work is carried out in collaboration with Hjørring Municipality and through a participatory process with stakeholders and residents, combined with analysis and fieldwork to map spatial conditions and mobility networks. Building on Lønstrup’s cultural identity and compact scale, the plan proposes people-centered, small-scale interventions that enhance pedestrian and cycling networks, improve paths, create more comfortable places to move and linger, and increase inclusive access to public spaces, local businesses, and cultural activities. To lower socio-economic barriers, it introduces free outdoor cultural events and new recreational spaces, alongside site-specific proposals such as a recreational route, nature-based playgrounds, a central plaza and meeting points, and a coherent bike-lane network with seasonal traffic management. Rather than changing the town’s character, the plan provides a realistic, phased framework to reduce congestion, improve livability, and support both residents and visitors within a sustainable development approach.
