Abstract
This a project concerning the development of a squatting plate to assist people in rural Sub-Saharan Africa with the initiation of safe disposal of excreta. The project takes it offset in the fact that more than 40 percent of the world’s population and 69 percent of rural Sub-Saharan Africa does not have access to improved sanitation [WHO]. The squatting plate will assist the users in the transition from open defecation to toilet with motivating factors such as child safety and reuse of urine for it fertilising abilities. Children have previously had difficulties with changing their behaviour due to the fact that they find the existing squatting plates’ exposed holes intimidating. Children’s everyday movement and lack of hand hygiene are major challenges when ending transmission of faecal bacteria to food and water. Squat 8 will try to assist children in the usage of toilets by increasing their feeling of safety when squatting and make the hole seem less intimidating. The motivational factor for adults to start using toilets and advocate it on to their children is the possibility of safe urine collection to use as fertiliser.
