Abstract

This thesis compares two very different kinds of journeys: crewed space missions and human displacement on Earth for survival. It asks whether they can be meaningfully compared and what that reveals about what a journey is. The study uses Lazar’s notion of disjunctive comparison, a method that places seemingly incompatible cases side by side to learn from both differences and overlaps. The analysis operates at two levels: meso and macro. At the meso level, it reads the trajectories of NASA astronauts and displaced people through a hermeneutic cycle, moving back and forth between the cases to refine understanding. At the macro level, it maps structural features identified through multidisciplinary literature in arts, religion, and literature: origin, destination, duration, resources, actors, purpose, agency (people’s capacity to act), effects, and preparation. The comparison uncovers similarities and differences and challenges the idea that journey is a fixed category. It highlights the roles played by sovereignty, international cooperation, agency, resources, and actors in shaping each journey. The thesis also questions whether common labels such as origin, destination, and duration always capture the nature of a journey. It builds links between space exploration and displacement studies and invites further research to deepen our understanding of journeys and their wider implications.

Denne afhandling sammenligner to meget forskellige rejser: bemandede rumfærder og fordrivelse på Jorden med det formål at overleve. Den undersøger, om sådanne fænomener overhovedet kan sammenlignes, og hvad det kan lære os om, hvad en rejse er. Afhandlingen bruger Lazars begreb om disjunktiv sammenligning, en metode til at sætte tilsyneladende uforenelige fænomener side om side for at lære af både ligheder og forskelle. Analysen foregår på to niveauer: meso og makro. På mesoniveauet sammenlignes NASA-astronauters forløb med fordrivne menneskers forløb gennem en hermeneutisk cirkel, hvor forståelsen forfines ved at gå frem og tilbage mellem de to cases. På makroniveauet undersøges strukturelle træk identificeret gennem tværfaglig litteratur i kunst, religion og litteratur: oprindelse, destination, varighed, ressourcer, aktører, formål, handlekraft (agency), effekter og forberedelse. Sammenligningen afdækker både ligheder og forskelle og udfordrer antagelsen om, at rejse er en fast kategori. Den belyser betydningen af suverænitet, internationalt samarbejde, handlekraft, ressourcer og aktører i de to typer rejser. Afhandlingen stiller også spørgsmålstegn ved, om almindelige rejsekategorier som oprindelse, destination og varighed altid kan fange en rejses karakter. Den skaber forbindelser mellem rumfartsforskning og fordrivelsesstudier og peger på nye forskningsspørgsmål, der kan udbygge vores forståelse af rejser og deres brede implikationer.
