Abstract
This thesis examines the experiences of Nepalese students in Denmark through the lenses of precarity and migration infrastructure. Using a phenomenological research design and in-depth interviews with seven participants, supported by thematic analysis, the study addresses the question: How do precarity and migration infrastructure shape the experiences and challenges faced by Nepalese students in Denmark? The analysis indicates that education consultancies often promote overly optimistic narratives about studying abroad, leading to unmet expectations upon arrival. Financial pressures are central as students balance high living costs with limited and sometimes precarious employment. The study also notes disparities in academic experiences across institutional types, the importance of community and networks for wellbeing and day-to-day navigation, and the effects of legal and regulatory frameworks on study and work. The research provides empirical insight into the complex interplay between migration infrastructure and precarity in the everyday lives of international students in Denmark.
Denne afhandling undersøger nepalesiske studerendes oplevelser i Danmark gennem begreberne prekaritet og migrationsinfrastruktur. Med et fænomenologisk forskningsdesign og dybdegående interviews med syv respondenter, suppleret af tematisk analyse, adresserer studiet forskningsspørgsmålet: Hvordan former prekaritet og migrationsinfrastruktur de erfaringer og udfordringer, som nepalesiske studerende møder i Danmark? Analysen peger på, at uddannelseskonsulenter ofte skaber for optimistiske forventninger til udlandsstudier, hvilket fører til skuffelser ved ankomst. Økonomiske bekymringer er gennemgående, idet studerende balancerer høje leveomkostninger med begrænsede og til tider prekære jobmuligheder. Der fremhæves forskelle i de akademiske erfaringer på tværs af institutionstyper, betydningen af fællesskaber og netværk for trivsel og navigation i hverdagen, samt virkningerne af juridiske og regulative rammer på studie- og arbejdsliv. Studiet bidrager med empirisk indsigt i den komplekse sammenhæng mellem migrationsinfrastruktur og prekaritet i internationale studerendes hverdagsliv i Danmark.
