Abstract
This thesis examines how Nirvana employs linguistic and stylistic elements in their lyrics to understand how meaning is constructed and what kinds of life experiences are conveyed. Framed by the questions of how language is used across the band’s three studio albums (Bleach, Nevermind, and In Utero) and what this reveals about the band and especially Kurt Cobain, the study combines a quantitative corpus-stylistic analysis of word frequencies and patterns across albums with a qualitative close reading of conceptual metaphors in three songs (About a Girl, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and Heart-Shaped Box). The work is grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics (including transitivity and process types) and Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The findings indicate several linguistic patterns in Nirvana’s lyrics, but none are strong enough to support generalizable claims. The interpretation suggests that the language functions as a chronicle of Cobain’s mental journey into fame and his subsequent decline into depression and drug abuse, with each album exhibiting distinct thematic stances and linguistic/stylistic choices aligned with the band’s changing context.
