Abstract

This thesis explores how design can make the slow, everyday changes in sunlight visible and meaningful. It examines how people perceive light in their surroundings and asks: How can a design highlight a passing moment of sunlight to help people feel connected to their place on Earth? The analysis identifies conditions that best reveal the sun’s movement, such as its angle and timing. Based on this, the design is tailored to its specific location and uses the geometry of sunlight—the sun’s path and angles—to reveal daily and seasonal cycles. At solar midday (when the sun is highest in the sky), the design creates a brief alignment that marks a natural transition that often goes unnoticed. Throughout the year, it frames the changing light, drawing attention to how sunlight shifts across space and over time. By making these cycles visible, the design strengthens awareness of the ongoing environmental changes around us.
