Abstract

This thesis examines how smart charging of electric vehicles can increase the hosting capacity of residential low-voltage grids for solar PV while maintaining power quality and minimizing charging costs. A residential LV distribution grid with household demand, PV generation, and home EV charging is modeled and simulated in MATLAB. Hosting capacity is assessed against grid constraints such as voltage levels and component loading, and the work addresses challenges including reverse power flow, overvoltages, and phase imbalance under high PV and EV penetration. The approach combines data analysis of load and PV profiles, EV home-charging availability, load-flow analysis, and charging optimization under different tariff schemes (Time-of-Day and net metering) to develop a balanced strategy that enhances PV self-consumption and system flexibility. The excerpt does not report quantitative findings, but the case studies evaluate impacts on EV owners’ costs and the grid’s hosting capacity.
