Abstract
Cities are becoming more digital, and “smart city” ideas—using data and technology to run cities more efficiently—are shaping urban planning. Much smart city work emphasizes technical operations, while everyday life, community, and well-being often receive less attention. This thesis examines how citizens can be placed more at the center of smart cities by linking smart city approaches with social sustainability, understood as inclusion, participation, and quality of life. The study analyzes the neighborhood development project Stigsborg Havnefront in Aalborg Municipality, which aims to create both smart and socially sustainable neighborhoods. The research question is: How can elements of the smart city foster social sustainability in neighborhoods, and how can Aalborg Municipality use smart solutions to integrate social sustainability in Stigsborg’s neighborhoods? Theoretically, the thesis combines smart city and smart neighborhoods (the physical/technological side) with social sustainability (the social side) and uses this framework to analyze the case. Empirically, the thesis draws on interviews with urban planners experienced in social sustainability and smart city—including a planner from Aalborg Municipality working on Stigsborg—and on document analysis of project materials. The analysis indicates that Stigsborg pays strong attention to both smart solutions and social sustainability, but they are often treated separately. The thesis contributes practical ways to bridge the two. It identifies how smart solutions can support social sustainability in neighborhoods, for example through digital platforms that strengthen citizen participation and community building, and through robust infrastructure that improves liveability.
