Abstract
The Uhane Wave Slide is a new digital musical instrument inspired by the lap steel guitar, which is typically played horizontally with a slide. It extends this playing approach by using magnetic feedback to keep the strings vibrating continuously without being plucked. The string vibrations are captured by a piezo bridge pickup and analyzed in real time by a Bela microcontroller (a small embedded computer), which continuously tracks frequency (pitch) and the amplitude envelope (loudness over time). The player has two sound generators that can be mixed with the output signal and shifted up or down in octave steps using faders (sliders).
