Abstract

This thesis examines how the United States and China understand and exercise hegemony, illustrated through their positioning during the Russia–Ukraine crisis. To provide context, it first outlines key events and drivers leading up to the war and situates the conflict within the broader Sino-American rivalry and emerging bipolarity. The study employs a qualitative content analysis of officially published press releases and briefings from both great powers to identify underlying norm priorities and the target audiences their rhetoric seeks to persuade. The analysis is grounded in the concept of strategic rhetorical dissociation and the English School’s theory of hegemony and legitimacy in international society. The findings indicate that the United States and China differ in their normative priorities and in the constituencies they seek to enlist to accept their global leadership, and that future cooperation is likely to become more tumultuous. The thesis also offers suggestions for further research and reflections on applying the chosen theoretical approaches.
