Abstract

This thesis presents a qualitative study based on interviews with experts on collective honor culture. It examines how honor-related and collectivist norms may affect the relationship between sexual abuse of minority girls and their psychological adjustment, and explores protection and risk factors as well as the role of the support system. Using Finkelhor and Browne’s four trauma dynamics (traumatic sexualization, betrayal, powerlessness, and stigmatization) as an analytical lens, the study identifies asymmetrical power relations, the need to maintain a good reputation, sanctions against girls after disclosure, condemnation and rejection of victims, and protection of abusers. Potential protective conditions include well-functioning families and caring collective communities around the girls; honor emphasis and efforts to avoid loss of honor can contribute to difficulties after abuse but appear less harmful in well-functioning families. Cultural practices intended to prevent abuse, such as control and protection of girls, may coexist with patriarchal, hierarchical structures that can also facilitate abuse. The study further highlights limited cultural competence in support services and cultural barriers to seeking help, which hinder the detection and response to sexual abuse of minority girls.

Formålet er at undersøge, hvordan ære- og kollektivt orienterede normer kan påvirke sammenhængen mellem seksuelle overgreb mod minoritetspiger og deres psykologiske tilpasning, samt at belyse beskyttelses- og risikofaktorer og hjælpesystemets rolle.
