Abstract
This master’s thesis develops a design proposal for the Setúbal Municipal Library in Portugal using Jørn Utzon’s paradigm as both an analytical and generative framework. The central question is how to create a site-specific, humane and poetic library that synthesizes Arche (nature, landscape, place, the primitive, ethics and culture) and Techne (making, structure, material, light and geometry) as a critical response to homogenizing global architecture. The work aligns with critical regionalism and a tectonic approach emphasizing structural legibility, material honesty and tactile detailing, with close attention to topography, climate and light.
