Abstract
This thesis examines yoga tourism as a branch of special interest tourism and asks how yoga tourists’ experiences in India are shaped by the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Adopting a pragmatic research stance that acknowledges multiple realities and values triangulated evidence, the study focuses on two destinations—Rishikesh and Goa—and uses a mixed-methods design combining semi-structured interviews and an online survey with audio-visual ethnography, field notes, and the author’s practitioner-researcher perspective, including photographs from 2016 field trips. The analysis is organized by sense and draws on non-representational and embodied tourism frameworks. Findings highlight the inherently multisensory, bodily character of yoga travel and suggest that continued growth in yoga tourism will be accompanied by greater attention to complex “sensescapes” in both destinations and practice. The thesis addresses a gap in the literature on the multisensory dimensions of yoga tourism and outlines avenues for future research.
