Abstract

Agile methods are widely used in software development, and Scrum is the most common. Although Scrum has a small set of well-defined practices, many companies adapt it in practice. Our study explores these adaptations, known as 'ScrumButs' - cases where teams say 'we use Scrum, but…'. Using a multimethod approach, we reviewed 17 empirical studies on Scrum modifications and interviewed 9 Scrum practitioners from 7 software companies. We found ScrumButs across every part of the Scrum framework. Different ScrumButs were driven by different kinds of reasoning that mirror organizational culture. We discuss how these insights can help assess ScrumButs without assuming they are inherently good or bad, and how such changes may influence a team's agility - their ability to respond to change.
