Abstract

The English title of the bachelor project is: School Refusal in Aalborg Municipality: A study of the interdisciplinary meetings related to school refusal. The intention of the project is to examine the challenges that can occur during interdisciplinary meetings in connection with preventing school refusal in Aalborg Municipality and how these challenges can be addressed to make interdisciplinary cooperation more efficient. Furthermore, this project examines how the social worker, connected to a school, takes care of parents in connection with preventing school refusal. School refusal is a growing problem in Denmark, and it can lead to consequences for the child, the family, and society. To investigate these issues, we conducted qualitative interviews with a teacher, a person in charge of students' well-being, and a social worker connected to multiple schools in Aalborg Municipality. In the first part of the analysis, theory about relational coordination and the principles described by this theory have been used. The principles in relational coordination describe six characteristics that should be followed to ensure that the meeting is as efficient as possible. In the second part of the analysis, theory about how a social worker communicates with citizens has been used. Leif Kongsgaard describes eight forms of communication. We have used the involving form of communication and the evolving form of communication. In the first part of the analysis, we discovered that there are more challenges that can occur during interdisciplinary meetings. We found that different definitions of school refusal, different definitions of the problem in general, professional pride, knowledge about other professionals' qualifications, and the use of technical terminology are challenges that can occur during interdisciplinary meetings. We discovered that the principles in relational coordination can address these challenges. In the second part of the analysis, we discovered that the power structure in the relationship between the social worker and the parents is somewhat more even, because the social worker does not have the authority to make decisions. Her job is to provide advice and guidance. Furthermore, we discovered that the social worker uses the involving form of communication and the evolving form of communication to develop the relationship between herself and the parents. Based on the conclusions we have drawn; we have made some suggestions for innovation.
