I slutningen af 2024 ændrede regeringen museumsloven og samlede museernes hovedopgaver til tre: formidling, vidensudvikling og samlingsudvikling. Dette speciale undersøger, hvad samlingsudvikling kan betyde for de danske kulturhistoriske museer, og hvordan opgaven kan omsættes i praksis. Først skitseres professionalisering og lovgivning for at placere reformen i en historisk ramme. Dernæst kobles international forskningslitteratur til danske cases for at beskrive centrale tilgange: betydningsvurdering, dokumentation og (kon)tekstkopier, udskillelse (deaccessionering) samt samlingsstrategier og samarbejde. Med afsæt i disse rammer argumenteres der for, at eksisterende samlinger kan tilføres ny relevans uden nyindkøb, blandt andet gennem revurdering, reorganisering, opdateret registreringspraksis og koordinerede indsatser på tværs af museer. Arbejdet er et normativt, forskningsinformeret oplæg, der peger på mulige greb, opmærksomhedspunkter og udfordringer, som institutioner må adressere for at arbejde mere fremadrettet med samlinger inden for den nye lovs brede forståelse af samlingsudvikling; økonomi og museernes øvrige hovedopgaver ligger uden for afhandlingens fokus.

At the end of 2024, the Danish museum law was revised, consolidating museums’ main tasks into three: dissemination, knowledge development, and collection development. This thesis explores what collection development can mean for Danish cultural history museums and how the task can be put into practice. It first outlines professionalization and legislation to situate the reform historically. It then draws on international research and Danish cases to present key approaches: significance assessment, documentation and (con)text copies, deaccessioning, and collection strategies and collaboration. Based on these frames, the thesis argues that existing collections can gain new relevance without additional acquisitions, for example through reassessment, reorganization, updated registration practices, and coordinated cross-museum efforts. The work is a normative, research-informed proposal that highlights practical options, points of attention, and challenges museums must address to work more future-oriented with collections under the law’s broad understanding of collection development; financial issues and the other main tasks fall outside the scope.
