Abstract

Many Danish villages are losing residents due to double urbanization, where people move from smaller settlements to larger towns and cities. Because villages hold important cultural and social value, it is crucial to counter this decline by making them attractive again. This thesis examines how mapping a village can reveal its unique qualities and how targeted design interventions can amplify these strengths to attract new residents and tourists. Using an integrated design process, the study conducts a comprehensive mapping and analysis of Tversted to identify its potentials, with nature and existing tourism emerging as the village’s most significant assets. Based on these findings, the thesis proposes a place-based design that combines a wayfinding system with an activity zone to draw attention to local attractions, improve the visitor experience, and strengthen Tversted’s appeal to both visitors and prospective residents.
