Abstract

This thesis explores how Copenhagen Municipality can encourage more circular practices among residents when they move home. It focuses on resource use in three material categories: textiles, electronics, and furniture. The work is linked to collaboration with the municipality on the Climate Action Plan for 2035. In a metropolitan city like Copenhagen, where over 90,000 residents move each year, moving often leads both to buying new items and disposing of old ones. The approach centers on citizens’ perspectives and experiences. The study draws on Practice Theory (which examines everyday routines), the Circular Economy (keeping materials in use and minimizing waste), and Circular Societies (community-level solutions that support reuse and sharing). Methods include interviews with eight recently relocated residents and a survey on resource use during the moving period, as well as a workshop with residents and three field experts. Findings show that moving is a bundle of practices with three main stages: preparation, the move itself, and settling in. Two analyses indicate that consumption is often driven by life-phase changes that create new needs. The practices of acquiring and disposing of belongings are identified and analyzed. Finally, the thesis presents two proposals to foster circularity during moves, designed to fit within the municipality’s ability to influence household resource use.
