Abstract
This thesis examines how China’s 2060 carbon neutrality commitment affects and interacts with its energy trade with Russia, and why the two countries continue this cooperation. Against the global backdrop of climate change, it outlines the rationale for carbon neutrality and international cooperation (including UNFCCC, Kyoto, and Glasgow/COP26), then reviews the history of China–Russia energy ties and the economic and political drivers sustaining them. The study applies international relations theories—realism, liberalism, and constructivism—to analyze motivations and potential implications for energy demand, the energy mix, and power dynamics as China pursues a greener transition. Methodologically, it adopts a qualitative, theory-guided design combining historical analysis with a case study of RMB–ruble settlement for natural gas to illuminate why energy trade persists and how it may evolve in a greener direction. The aim is to clarify the interplay among energy trade, geopolitics, and climate goals and to provide insights into how China’s carbon neutrality pledge may reshape its relationship with Russia.
