Abstract
In this thesis, its investigated how the process from going to prison to being released again is experienced from a sentenced prisoner’s point of view. It is important to understand what challenges the sentenced prisoners experience during each part of the process, to gain insight into, and being able to provide explanations to, why two thirds of convicted people in Denmark fall back into crime. This rate should be viewed in the context of an increased focus from the authorities on the process of being released from prison over the past three decades. The rate has been more or less stable in the period, showing no clear signs of an effect of the increased focus. For this reason, it is important to survey the sentenced prisoners themselves, in order to shed light on the current short comings of the current process, and thereby gain increased understanding of the complexity around being released from prison. The purpose of the thesis is to gain insight into the structural challenges the sentenced prisoners experience during the process of going to prison and being released again, and how pro-social relationships can support living a life without crime. In order to understand the process of being released from prison in depth, its relevant to investigate the different steps of going to prison, serving the time and being released again as well as the immediate time after. In order to answer the problem definition, six sentenced prisoners and two people having been released from prison are surveyed about how they experience/-d the entire process. An adaptive way of working has been used in order to allow the data to guide the analysis. Theoretical considerations from the field of desistance have been included, as well as existing research on reintegration into society after being released from prison. The existing research covers both national and international studies. The analysis shows that there is missing an alignment in the first part of the process of going to prison, as some prisoners describes it differently. Furthermore, it requires a great amount of effort from the sentenced prisoners to take part in reintegrating activities. The prisoners with outlook to be released to into structural challenges, such as unemployment and/or homelessness, have no motivation for taking part in reintegrating activities during their sentencing, as they see it having no effect on the challenges they look into upon release. Upon release into society, external support appears crucial for successful reintegration, which highlights extensive need for support during the entire process. Generally, the more sentences you have, the less optimistic about the future you are.
