Abstract
This thesis proposes a design for the currently underused Place Mazas Square in Paris’s 12th arrondissement. The aim is to strengthen social sustainability and make the urban fabric more resilient as the city undergoes an ecological transition. The project uses a multiscale approach—looking from the city and neighborhood down to the building scale—to connect the site’s existing strengths with its surroundings in a respectful way, building on Paris’s existing energies to create new relationships between activities and users. The proposal centers on two main elements: a Neighbourhood Hub and a Food Hub. The Neighbourhood Hub combines housing with shared spaces and services to support everyday community life. The Food Hub includes a Bouillon restaurant and a greenhouse closely linked to an urban farm, bringing food production, cooking, and public space together. Together, these programs are intended to foster community, create diversity, and encourage more sustainable habits. Throughout, the project follows an architectural-tectonic approach—that is, it joins architectural ideas with how things are constructed and detailed. Design choices were developed and evaluated for their functional, technical, and aesthetic qualities so that structure and form reinforce one another and create a whole greater than the sum of its parts.
