Reimagining the Adaptive Harbor Front: Faaborg as a Case Study for Resilient Urbanism

This thesis examines how the coastal town of Faaborg can redevelop its harbor front in a way that both enhances urban life and increases resilience to future climate change. The work builds on the ongoing transformation of the former slaughterhouse into a new cultural hub and on municipal plans for flood protection, including a future seawall. Through a multiscalar analysis of the surrounding landscape, the historic city core, and the flood-prone harbor front, the project identifies key challenges: the old town occupies higher ground, while newer harbor areas built on reclaimed and low-lying land are highly exposed to sea-level rise and storm surges, and the main waterfront road, Havnegade, acts as a physical and experiential barrier between city and harbor. In response, the thesis develops the concept of a Synergetic Harbor Front as a design strategy to improve spatial cohesion, climate resilience, and recreational qualities. Using an integrated design process that combines field studies, user interviews, GIS-based flood analysis, theories of landscape urbanism and wayfinding, and iterative sketching and digital modeling, the proposal is articulated in two time perspectives: a near future that focuses on strengthening and protecting existing character and heritage through better pedestrian connections, reduced traffic dominance, and green, tactile wayfinding, and a far future that introduces adaptive, floodable landscapes and blue-green infrastructures, such as daylighting a stream and creating temporary retention landscapes that also function as public spaces, to enable gradual adaptation to rising sea levels. In doing so, the thesis presents a holistic vision for transforming Faaborg’s harbor front into a more connected, resilient, and socially vibrant urban waterfront at the intersection of city, harbor, and landscape.

Dette speciale undersøger, hvordan kystbyen Faaborg kan udvikle sin havnefront på en måde, der både styrker bylivet og gør byen mere robust over for fremtidige klimaforandringer. Udgangspunktet er den igangværende omdannelse af det tidligere slagteri til et nyt kulturelt knudepunkt samt kommunens planer om kystbeskyttelse, herunder en kommende havmur. Gennem en multiskalar analyse af landskab, historisk bykerne og den oversvømmelsestruede havnefront identificeres centrale udfordringer: den historiske bydel ligger højt, mens nyere havnearealer på opfyldte og lavtliggende områder er særligt udsatte for havvandsstigninger og stormflod, og hovedvejen Havnegade fungerer som en fysisk og oplevelsesmæssig barriere mellem by og havn. Projektet udvikler begrebet den synergetiske havnefront som et designgreb til at skabe rumlig sammenhæng, klimamæssig robusthed og øgede rekreative kvaliteter. Med afsæt i en integreret designproces, feltstudier, brugerinterviews, GIS-baseret oversvømmelsesanalyse, teorier om landskabsurbanisme og wayfinding samt iterativ skitsering og modellering, formuleres et forslag i to tidsperspektiver: en nærfremtid, hvor byens eksisterende kvaliteter og kulturarv styrkes via forbedrede fodgængerforbindelser, trafikdæmpning og grøn taktil wayfinding, samt en fjernfremtid, hvor fleksible, oversvømmelige landskaber og blå-grønne infrastrukturer, som f.eks. frilægning af et vandløb og etablering af midlertidige regnvandslandskaber, gør havnen i stand til gradvist at tilpasse sig stigende vandstande. På den måde formulerer specialet et helhedsorienteret bud på, hvordan Faaborgs havnefront kan omdannes til et mere sammenhængende, resilient og socialt levende byområde i mødet mellem by, havn og landskab.
