Abstract
This thesis examines the experiences of LGBTQ refugees and migrants in Italy, focusing on both physical and emotional homelessness and the development of belonging. In a context marked by strained reception systems and limited cultural understanding, queer migrants may face danger, isolation, and pressure to conform to Western norms. The study asks how Italian NGOs address these forms of homelessness and support the renegotiation of home, family, community, and belonging. Using a qualitative case study, it draws on interviews with queer refugees and migrants as well as volunteers and social workers, and is guided by intersectionality, queer diaspora theory, and the politics of belonging. The analysis centers on bottom-up practices within LGBTQ organizations, including housing initiatives and community-building activities, and critically engages with integration discourse by valuing lived experience. Findings discussed in the thesis suggest that involvement with local LGBTQ organizations and their good practices can help queer refugees and migrants detach from homelessness and build a sense of home and belonging, even when stable accommodation is lacking, offering insights for more comprehensive future approaches.
Denne afhandling undersøger erfaringerne hos LGBTQ-flygtninge og migranter i Italien med fokus på både fysisk og følelsesmæssig hjemløshed og på udviklingen af tilhørighed. I en kontekst præget af et presset modtagelsessystem og begrænset kulturel forståelse kan queer migranter møde fare, isolation og pres for at tilpasse sig vestlige normer. Studiet spørger, hvordan italienske NGO’er adresserer disse former for hjemløshed og støtter en nyforhandling af hjem, familie, fællesskab og tilhørighed. Med et kvalitativt casestudie bygger det på interviews med queer flygtninge og migranter samt frivillige og socialarbejdere og er teoretisk forankret i intersektionalitet, queer diaspora og tilhørighedens politik.
