Abstract

This master’s thesis examines the role of public transport in building more sustainable mobility in the municipalities of Aalborg and Aarhus. The study draws on five expert interviews. Analysis of these interviews highlights three influential factors: political decisions, available funding, and the 'carrot and stick' dilemma—balancing measures that limit car use with incentives that make public transport and other sustainable alternatives more attractive. The findings suggest that the shift toward sustainable mobility is gradual. It depends on political willingness to change and must happen within limited resources. Municipalities and transport operators therefore need to offer appealing sustainable mobility options while managing financial constraints.
