Abstract
This study examines how Nature-based solutions (NBS) can act as coastal protection and contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation. The study is based on a literature review and two comparative case study of two Danish cases that have implemented Nature-based solutions. The literature review additionally provides an overview of the different legislative and governance structures present between various actors, when planning for Nature-based solutions in coastal protection. Drawing on the multi-level governance perspective and the Strategic Niche Management theory both the potential and barriers of the implementation of Nature-based solutions are highlighted. The analysis shows the importance of foundational governance and policy structures to promote the use of Nature-based solutions over other conventional coastal protection technologies. In addition to this a new Nature-based thinking approach is recommended in order to secure a holistic sustainable transition.
