Abstract

Video games have shaped society and culture for about half a century. They can be understood as technology, as a techno-social phenomenon, and as art and entertainment. Yet the early years of the medium are sparsely documented and archived. As a result, video game preservation—collecting, maintaining, and making games accessible—has become increasingly important. This project explores how PC game collectors contribute to preservation at the individual level, the physical, cultural, ethical, and legal barriers they face, and how they navigate them.
