Abstract
The background for this master’s thesis is a period of 4 months practical training. The therapist and the researcher in this master’s thesis, is a music therapy student in the 10th semester at Aalborg University. The training took place in a care home for elderly people. The aim of the master thesis is to investigate presence in music therapy. The research question is based on a case study. The case is a 5-minute video recorded period from a music therapy session with a resident in the nursing home diagnosed with dementia. The researcher was allowed to video record the music therapy sessions based on a signed consent form from the resident and the next of kin. The method of the thesis is an intuitive investigation in three steps: Immersion, Collection and Findings. The process of the analysis is circular. It means that every finding is a subject to another immersion, collection, finding and so on. This intuitive method is invented by the researcher. The investigation begins (using the three steps) with a reflective process followed by a visual process, which is the researcher’s path into the material. The result of the study presents presence in music therapy on three levels: Presence in dialog is how the resident and the therapist communicate together through words. This is how the therapist is tuning herself empathically and emotionally to the resident. Presence in silence is the nonverbal communication between the resident and the therapist. The therapist is communicating nonverbally with her deep and audible breathing. She is mentalizing in a way, by tuning herself into trying to understand what the resident is thinking, feeling or maybe wants to express. Presence in music is the nonverbal communication the resident and the music therapist are having with each other. The therapist is asking questions through the music but doesn’t demand any answer. When the resident is talking through the music she responds. Keywords: music therapy, dementia, case study, intuitive method, presence in music therapy, presence in dialog, presence in silence, presence in music.
