Power to the People: Supporting the Practice of Shifting

Abstract

Shifting refers to intentionally moving the use of energy-intensive appliances to periods with lower electricity prices or a higher share of renewable energy, enabling people to save money or reduce environmental impact without lowering overall consumption. While conceptually simple, shifting is difficult to integrate into everyday life due to interdependent activities and temporal rhythms. This project investigates what a participatory design approach, combined with practice theory, can uncover for designing interactive systems that support shifting. We conducted a one-week deployment of a descriptive prototype that displayed hourly electricity prices and an appliance list with estimated costs at different times, with six participants across four households, followed by three co-design workshops. Analyzed through practice theory, the work provided a deeper understanding of shifting as a practice: preserving users’ freedom to decide how to integrate shifting is crucial, and effective support requires feedback on shifting behavior. We identified three fundamental needs related to shifting and developed a design concept to exemplify how these insights can be applied. We further argue that HCI alone has limited capacity to drive widespread adoption; solutions should appeal to intrinsic motivations and support broader initiatives rather than serve as the sole fix.

Samtidig argumenterer vi for, at HCI alene har begrænset mulighed for at skabe udbredt adfærdsændring; løsninger bør også appellere til indre motivation og understøtte bredere initiativer frem for at være den eneste løsning.
