Abstract
This master’s thesis explores a slower, purpose-driven approach to urban planning in which future residents play a central role in shaping their local built environment. Using Refshaleøen in Copenhagen as a case study, it examines how contemporary city development is often driven by powerful economic actors, creating a sense of disconnection between new buildings, the people who use them, and the identity of the place. The thesis discusses how stronger involvement of citizens and future residents can counteract this perceived alienation and reinforce a sense of place, and how a more collaborative, dialogue-based planning process might be structured. Through conceptual development and case studies, including examples such as Tinggården and Baugruppen, it outlines a conceptual planning framework that serves as a strategic starting point for conversations with future residents. The work focuses particularly on how to initiate such participatory processes and establish conditions for more inclusive and livable urban spaces, and concludes with a critical reflection on the potential of the proposed approach and the areas where further refinement is needed.
