Abstract
This thesis examines how planning strategies in Copenhagen and Barcelona signal pathways toward more sustainable cities when read through storylines and structural stories. Framing the analysis in the context of transport’s urban and environmental impacts and the Sustainable Development Goals, selected municipal planning documents are analyzed using three storylines— the role of the car, space for children, and the human city—combined with discourse and structural story perspectives. The Same, Faster, Harder, and Smarter scenarios provide the evaluative framework for positioning each city’s trajectory. The method includes a literature review, systematic document analysis, and a comparative assessment of the two cases. Findings indicate that Copenhagen largely continues established sustainable mobility initiatives with some innovation, placing it on the Same or Faster pathways, while Barcelona’s Superblock model represents a more transformative shift aligned with the Smarter pathway. The thesis shows how planning narratives can reveal cities’ directions of change toward sustainability.
