Abstract
This thesis explores how electric vehicle charging stations can be planned and designed to enhance, rather than burden, the aesthetics of public space in Košice. As EV adoption rises, charging infrastructure is becoming a visible part of cities, yet aesthetic considerations are often secondary to functionality, risking disruptions to coherent urban environments. The study builds on a literature review and document analysis of existing planning and design guidance for charging stations, complemented by a targeted questionnaire with eight local public-space experts. The research is framed by Ole B. Jensen’s ‘mobilities in situ’ (staging mobilities) to understand how physical interventions shape behavior and public life. Findings indicate that charging stations can contribute positively to the urban realm by reducing visual clutter, strengthening sense of place, communicating environmental and city topics, and supporting the proliferation of art. The thesis proposes principles tailored to Košice’s context so that charging stations coalesce with the cityscape instead of being perceived as merely necessary technical infrastructure.
