This thesis examines how urbanization, globalization, and changes in transport networks have accelerated uneven development in Denmark, with peripheral areas facing decline yet holding distinctive assets. Drawing on urban design’s interdisciplinary approach, Volume 1 aims to define and locate “peripheral potentials” at national, regional, and local scales—focusing on the West Coast—by analyzing statistics, surveys, policies, strategies, campaigns, empirical data, reports, and subjective experiences. The objective is to provide a nuanced picture of peripheral Denmark and inform the heated debate on the approval of 10 coastal projects by preparing an “11th Coastal Project”: a strategic and architectural proposal that amplifies existing natural and cultural strengths in a specific area.
