Abstract
Background and objectives: Elite sport is a growing field of research, however in previous research a limited number of studies has investigated performance at the highest level. Aim: The purpose of this systematic review was to critically search and report the literature investigating environmental factors, which were related to opti-mization and performance in elite sport. Further this paper sought to investigate the relationship between performance and mental health in this field. Methods and mate-rials: This review design followed PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive and critical search was developed and extensive screening was performed. This systematic re-view used a mixed methods approach regarding the inclusion of quantitative and qualitative studies. This resulted in the inclusion of 7 quantitative studies and 14 qualitative studies. Results: This review found a number of different themes, which provide guidance to elite sport organisations by highlighting factors, which are im-portant in order for athletes to stay on the top of their game and win consecutive medals. However the quality of studies were limited and differentiated, and future research is needed to clarify how performance is sustained among the best. Conclu-sion: A number of different factors which facilitated performance were identified. This included factors related to mental health. With these factors in mind a synthesis of five themes were constructed.
