Abstract

This Master’s thesis examines how innovation in healthcare is understood by actors in the Innovation Clinics’ Monitor of Change Project, and what elements together make up innovation. The study uses ethnographic methods: interviews and participant observation during fieldwork at the Innovation Clinic, as well as participation in workshops and events. The empirical material is analyzed using Actor-Network Theory and Erik Riiskjær’s Controlling Logics. Actor-Network Theory views innovation as shaped by networks of people, organizations, and technologies, while Controlling Logics highlights different ways of steering and prioritizing work in healthcare. The thesis finds that participants’ perceptions and values help shape what innovation becomes in practice. From these perspectives, fourteen factors are identified as important to consider for innovation to succeed. It is essential to clarify the need and value the innovation addresses and to stay attentive to the actors’ agendas and the effects of different factors. In this process, the Innovation Clinic plays a mediating role, linking actors, needs, perspectives, and factors to support successful innovation.
