Abstract

This thesis explores how a new Brand & Experience Center for Carlsberg can be designed as a net‑zero energy building within the historic setting of the Carlsberg breweries in Valby. Building on a 2011 architectural competition and the 2007 Entasis master plan, the project aims to consolidate Carlsberg’s public and internal functions under one roof while contributing to the area’s revitalization. The methodology combines historical and contextual studies (global and local), microclimate and adjacency analyses, functional and room programming, and reference case studies (including Koldinghus and the Darwin Centre, Phase 2) with an iterative sketching and synthesis process. The technical focus addresses indoor climate and energy through passive measures (form, orientation, envelope) and active systems, including a layered double façade and natural/assisted ventilation strategies. The resulting proposal develops differentiated volumes accommodating programs such as an auditorium, workspaces, and brand exhibitions, alongside roof and subtropical gardens, a lightweight superstructure (“The Cloud”), and integration of existing buildings. The excerpted early chapters outline aims, methods, and design strategies; detailed performance outcomes are not included here and are addressed later in the thesis.
