Abstract

This study examines what kinds of cyclists ride in Oslo, whether these groups prefer different types of bike infrastructure, and what that means for efforts to promote cycling. Using cluster analysis—a statistical method that groups people with similar responses—we developed a typology based on five factors and identified three groups: the Conscious Concerned, the Laid-back Rebels, and the Speedy Unafraid. The Conscious Concerned tend to ride in their immediate surroundings and choose routes with low traffic. The Speedy Unafraid seek smooth, fast routes, such as separated bike paths or major connections, and are willing to go out of their way to reach them. The Laid-back Rebels also ride locally but do not necessarily seek low-traffic routes. To support the first two groups, a denser bicycle network is essential; the Speedy Unafraid would benefit from a bicycle expressway—a fast, direct route for bicycles.
