Abstract
This thesis examines the opportunities that the Kyoto Protocol and its flexible mechanisms offer Romania in meeting its obligations under the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol. Building on a technical assistance project for the national climate strategy, it uses a scenario-based approach to outline plausible futures rather than predict a single outcome. The analysis integrates evidence on Romania’s economic development, energy sector demand and supply, and greenhouse gas emissions to identify future trends and potential gains. Based on the discussion, the thesis concludes that Romania can benefit from Joint Implementation projects and international emissions trading, provided that requirements are met and measures to improve energy efficiency are implemented.
