Abstract

Safely shutting down wind turbines during storms is essential to keep offshore wind power reliable as extreme winds become more common in the North Sea. This thesis investigates and validates practical storm strategies for offshore wind farms: planned, coordinated shutdowns of turbines to reduce disturbances to the electricity grid. The strategies are tested in a computer simulation (MATLAB Simulink) of a wind farm model based on Horns Rev I. Several wind profiles are used to represent different weather conditions, and the shutdown behavior is evaluated in each case. The study analyzes how power output and voltage levels respond under different shutdown procedures to identify the best approach for the specific case study. The recommended strategy balances a fast shutdown of the entire wind farm, minimal voltage drops, and a smooth transition to an idle state.
