Abstract

This thesis examines Danish single-family houses from the 1960s and 1970s and questions the widespread practice of demolishing them. Through a sociocultural analysis of the building code, industry narratives, and homeowner behavior, the findings show that demolition decisions often rest on a narrow focus on operational energy use. This overlooks embodied CO2 (the climate impact stored in the materials already in the house), architectural heritage, and the real potential for renovation. In response, the thesis introduces the PARCEL Compass: a holistic assessment framework that helps homeowners view the existing home as more than an energy account. The tool brings together four themes—architectural heritage, comfort, CO2, and economy—and makes both technical data and qualitative aspects more accessible. The framework is demonstrated through two concrete renovation cases in Kastrup and Greve. These examples show that strategic renovations can meet today’s environmental, functional, and economic requirements while preserving cultural and material value. The thesis thus points toward a New Better Building Practice grounded in preservation, informed renovation, and cultural behavior change.

Rammeværktøjet demonstreres gennem to konkrete renoveringscases i Kastrup og Greve.
