Abstract

This thesis addresses the societal changes underway in the Arctic environment and in Greenland’s modernization. By analyzing local traditions and current conditions, it proposes a Greenland Art Hub to support conscious, integrated social development. The hub combines the National Gallery of Greenlandic Art, as requested by the municipality, with a Culture House that provides classrooms and workshops for the local arts community. Architecturally, the project takes an integrated approach that sets a modest framework in respect of the existing environment. It emphasizes conscious design in which sustainable features and the architectural intention are developed together in a tectonic sense (that is, how structure and construction express the design idea).
