Abstract
Med udgangspunkt i vores interesse for tv-serierne The Killing, The Bridge og Borgen undersøgte vi, hvorfor disse Nordic Noir-serier er blevet en succes, og hvordan de kan have påvirket britiske seeres viden om og opfattelse af Danmark. Undersøgelsen bygger på fire datakilder: en gennemgang af britisk presseomtale af Nordic Noir; interviews med femten britiske seere, der havde set mindst én af de tre serier; seks interviews med danske og britiske fagfolk fra turisme- og filmbranchen med tilknytning til produktionerne; samt fire observationer af guidede Nordic Noir-ture i København. Resultaterne peger på, at britisk presse og mund-til-mund spredning fik mange til at begynde at se serierne, mens særprægede karakterer og spændingsdrevne plot holdt dem fast. Starting from our interest in the TV series The Killing, The Bridge and Borgen, we examined why these Nordic Noir dramas have been successful and how they may have shaped British viewers' awareness and perceptions of Denmark. The study is based on four types of data: a review of British press coverage of Nordic Noir; interviews with fifteen British viewers who had seen at least one of the three series; six interviews with Danish and British professionals from the tourism and film industries connected to the productions; and four observations of guided Nordic Noir tours in Copenhagen. We find that attention in the UK press and word of mouth encouraged people to start watching, while distinctive characters and suspenseful plots kept them engaged. The series raised awareness of Denmark, although viewers did not always believe the fictional picture matched reality. Nordic Noir was rarely the main reason for British travel to Denmark, but there is potential for film tourism. We also suggest that The Killing, The Bridge and Borgen can be grouped as 'Scandinavian dramas' to reflect both regional and genre influences. This thesis is presented as an example analysis that offers background knowledge and groundwork for further studies.
