Abstract
This thesis examines how reinforcement influences the load-bearing capacity and deformations of concrete elements with simple geometries. It combines an analytical approach based on Eurocode with a nonlinear 3D finite element model in Abaqus (Concrete Damage Plasticity) to compare predictive differences. Beams and columns are analyzed both without reinforcement and with longitudinal reinforcement, and the effects of stirrups and bent reinforcing bars are investigated. The elements are assumed simply supported, and geometric symmetry is used to simplify the models. The study focuses on ultimate capacity and deflections/deformations, and compares outcomes from the analytical and numerical models. The scope is limited to simple cross-sections and reinforcement layouts, a single concrete class, and no experimental validation. A comparison of the two models and their results underpins the conclusions; detailed findings are not included in this excerpt.
