Abstract
Amid rising resource use and environmental pressures, this thesis addresses the critique that the circular economy often overlooks social dimensions by exploring the broader concept of a circular society. It asks how niche innovations—local, bottom-up initiatives—can support a transition toward a circular society, and investigates this through a literature review, multiple case examples, and a case study in a local context in collaboration with the CirkØ research project. The project combines Design Thinking and SCRUM as a framework with theoretical lenses from the Multi-Level Perspective and Actor-Network Theory (Matters of Concern), and uses participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Findings highlight the importance of participation, solidarity, and communality in motivating people to engage in initiatives with a wider purpose and in encouraging more sustainable consumption and production patterns. To translate these insights into practice, the thesis develops a tool to guide implementation strategies and bridge academic literature with practitioner needs; the tool is organized around five guiding principles—Planet, Agency, Learning, Engagement, and Cultural mindset—and aims to support the wider uptake of circular practices. Overall, the work advances the circular society by foregrounding its social foundations and offering practical support for implementation.
