Abstract
This master thesis, proposed by ELFE (Hellenic Fertilizers Industry), investigates improvements to the control strategy of the neutralization water unit in an ammonia plant. The neutralization unit treats wastewater produced during regeneration of the demineralization unit for safe disposal to the sea, while the demineralization unit supplies demineralized water for steam generation. The work develops two process models: a pilot single-tank system and the actual two-tank configuration used at the plant. Both models are derived and linearized to address inherent nonlinearities by using linearization around an operating point and inversion of the nonlinear function. An observer-based PI controller is designed to regulate the systems. The models and control strategy are implemented in Simulink, and simulation results are presented and evaluated.
